Supporting a loved one

Prepare for a conversation with someone you're worried about — what to say, what you'll ask, and the boundaries you'll keep.

First: are you afraid this person may hurt you or others, or threaten you?

Reminders for the conversation

  • Choose a calm, private moment when they are sober.
  • Start with care: “I love you and I'm worried.”
  • Describe what you've seen and how it affects you — then listen.
  • Avoid labels, threats you won't keep, and arguing about details.
  • It's okay if it doesn't go well. You can come back to it.
